Pre-production CGI of a new furniture range

What did it take to visualise prototype furniture for Prof. Jolanta Usarewicz-Owsian?

A new furniture collection: a successful presentation

In December 2021 Prof. Jolanta Usarewicz-Owsian asked us to prepare a set of visualisations for a range of cabinet furniture she was designing. The aim was to show more than a dozen different pieces from the collection on a white background. Her designs included various sideboards, bookcases, display cabinets and TV units. Our job was to create imagery for a consistent and attractive presentation of the new design to the furniture manufacturer Konsimo.

The challenge

The project was at the concept stage, although the proportions and dimensions, function, general colour scheme and choice of materials had been set from the very beginning. We agreed the way we would work together in advance: digital prototypes, the 3D models and the photorealistic images rendered from them during the design process, were to be the designer’s main tool for making decisions as the pieces were modified and refined. Given this way of working, the deadline was a challenge. Every change to the design had to go straight into the next round of draft views.

What we received from the designer

Our starting point was dimensioned drawings in the form of hand sketches at a scale of 1:10. From them we built an accurate 3D model of each piece in 3ds Max, true to the production technology. That was our basis for the rest of the work. The professor also prepared coloured sketches of every piece, annotated with notes on how materials and colours were divided and on the veneer patterns and stains she had initially chosen. Reference photos completed the brief.

How we worked

The materials we received allowed us to work independently, consulting and checking only the construction and production aspects of the collection as we went. The first draft renders already showed the construction and proportions of the furniture, dressed in specific materials. The designer reviewed them at every stage, changing parts of a piece or its materials as needed. This way of working made it possible to refine every detail that cannot be resolved at the concept sketch stage. Because changes were made in an orderly, systematic way, we kept the working time to the necessary minimum, and every modification was a step forward.

The result

We completed this intense project, full of stylistic changes, in eight working days. It produced twelve high-resolution views of individual pieces in different finishes and materials, on a white background. We delivered .JPG files (RGB) for digital media and .TIF files for print, should they be needed.

Prof. Jolanta Usarewicz-Owsian: “Turning my sketches into 3D models so quickly made the decision-making process much smoother and allowed every detail of the furniture to be refined. The flexible approach to changes and the excellent pace of work produced a result that presented the new collection perfectly.”
